PRODUCT FAQs

Shea butter is a vegetable fat extracted from the nut of the African Karite tree, also called the Shea tree. You can find two types of shea butter available on the market for use: Unrefined (Raw) Shea butter or Refined Shea butter. We at Motherland Organics offer the Unrefined Shea butter as it retains all its vitamins and healing properties.

Our Shea Butter comes from a small village in the West of Nigeria.

Shea Butter is made by cracking the Shea nut to access the flesh of the nut, the cracked nuts are then washed and left to dry so that all the moisture is removed. The nuts are then pounded and roasted down to a brown paste. Once this has been done, water is added to the brown paste and a long stirring process is started. With this complete the paste is washed with distilled water to purify it. The paste is then heated over fire. As it heats the fat rises to the top and separates from the paste. This fat is then scooped from the top and is put aside to cool and solidify. Once this process is complete Unrefined Shea butter is created.

Shea Butter is a very resilient butter, with a long shelf of 3-4 years from the date of production as long as it is stored properly. We keep on the safe side and guarantee a 2-year shelf life on our Unrefined Shea butter so you get fresh butter and do not risk using it when it goes bad.

To make sure your shea butter doesn't go bad prematurely make sure you store your butter in a dark cool place, this is due to light and heat affecting the chemical structure of your butter causing it to smell rancid and acidic.

Water contaminating your butter without the presence of preservatives could cause mold and yeast to grow and the butter to be spoiled.

Shea butter helps retain moisture by forming a protective barrier on the skin's surface which reduces the loss of water and keeps your skin hydrated.

Despite being a fat butter, it is non-comedogenic. so it will not clog pores making it ideal for people who suffer from acne.

The plant esters of shea butter have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. This helps minimise irritation caused by environmental factors, such as dry weather as well as inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema.

Shea butter has significant levels of vitamins A and E, which means it promotes strong antioxidant activity.

Antioxidants are important anti-aging agents. They protect your skin cells from free radicals that can lead to premature aging and dull-looking skin.

Shea butter also helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scarrings. It does this by stopping scar tissue from reproducing while encouraging healthy cell growth to take their place.

You use our Shea butter by scooping a pea size portion of shea from our pouch, then rubbing it between your fingers to let it melt. Then you gently massage it into your skin/hair. Keep in mind that this is a pure butter and a little goes a long way-just use enough that will get absorbed on your skin, and you can pat dry any excess as needed.

Shea butter is safe for all skin types and can be used on babies and children.

As most women prefer to use unscented products during this time , our Unrefined Shea butter is a customer favourite to keep stretch marks at bay during pregnancy and as a nipple balm during nursing.

Cocoa butter is a pale yellow or light butter that comes from cocoa beans.

Our Cocoa butter comes from Nigeria's cocoa-growing belt.

To harness cocoa butter, the beans are taken out of the larger cacao plant. Then they're roasted stripped and pressed to separate out the fat- the cocoa butter.

Cocoa Butter is a very resilient butter, with a long shelf of 2-5 years from the date of production if it is stored properly. We keep on the safe side and guarantee a 2-year shelf life on our Unrefined Cocoa butter, so you get fresh butter and do not risk using it when it goes bad.

Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids, which is why it's often touted for its ability to hydrate and nourish the skin and improve elasticity.

The fat in cocoa butter forms a protective barrier over skin to hold in moisture.

Cocoa butter is also rich in natural plant compounds called phytochemicals. These substances improve blood flow to the skin and help slow the aging of skin.

Cocoa butter is also great for smoothing scars, wrinkles and other marks on the skin.

You apply by breaking a small piece off from your pouch and rubbing it against your skin. This friction will melt the butter so it can be absorbed into the skin.

Cocoa butter is safe for all skin types and can be used on babies and kids.

Cocoa butter helps by seeping into the dermis (middle layer) and not just the epidermis (top layer), and cocoa is simply the one butter that can achieve this. Then the butter is absorbed into the dermis, it is able to retain even more moisture.

In early pregnancy, it is recommended to start applying cocoa butter to the areas that can be easily affected by stretch marks on month one all the way up until delivery. As your body goes back to its pre-pregnancy state, it is also useful to continue using the cocoa butter as the skin starts to shrink back.

Despite the name, jojoba oil is actually a polyunsaturated wax that comes from cold pressed Simmondsia chinensis seeds;it just happens to be chemically structured in a way that makes it turn to liquid at room temperature, which is why it has a such a thick, soft, velvety texture.

Our Jojoba Oil originates from the Israeli desert.

Jojoba oil has a long shelf of 2-5 years from the date of production as long as it is stored properly. We keep on the safe side and guarantee a 2-year shelf life on our Jojoba oil so you still receive an excellent oil and do not risk using it when it goes bad.

To make sure your Jojoba oil doesn't go bad prematurely make sure you store your butter in a dark cool place, this is due to light and heat affecting the chemical structure of your oil causing it to go bad.

Water contaminating your oil without the presence of preservatives could cause mold and yeast to grow and the oil to be spoiled.

Jojoba oil is an excellent source of vitamin B and E, selenium and zinc making it a great topical option for nourishing the health of your skin.

Jojoba oil is incredibly like sebum that your body naturally produces, this allows Jojoba oil to regulate sebum production. This keeps skin from looking oily and helps prevent acne caused by clogged pores.

Jojoba oils forms an invisible 'moisture barrier' on top of your skin to hold in hydration and help shield your skin from harsh dry pollutants in the atmosphere.

Jojoba oil strengthens and regenerates skin by enhancing collagen production, it also promotes good scalp health.

Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory and healing properties which help relieve dryness, flaking, itching and related symptoms.

Inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema will also find jojoba oil beneficial.

Jojoba mixes very well with other oils, as a carrier oil you can combine Jojoba with other oils that could be too harsh for your skin's delicate surfaces on their own.

Squirt a few drops onto your skin/scalp wherever it feels dry. For best results, try applying a thin layer of jojoba oil in the morning and evening or directly after you take a shower to lock in all that extra hydration

Rosehip seed oil is an oil extracted from the seeds of the Rosa Canina rose bush.

Our Rosehip seed oil originates from Chile.

Cocoa butter is also great for smoothing scars, wrinkles, and other marks on the skin.

Rosehip oil is extracted from the seeds of the Rosa Canina rose bush. The oil is extracted through an automated cold-press process. The process of cold-press extraction is when oils are squeezed out of the seed at a very low temperature so that it retains all its nutritional value and aroma.

The oil is a yellow-orange colour. It, unfortunately, does NOT have a rose scent to it- the scent is more earthy. It is a slightly thicker oil that absorbs beautifully into the skin.

Rosehip seed oil has a shelf life of 18 months, that shelf life can be shortened if exposed to light and heat which can cause the chemical structure of the oil to change. Water should also be kept away from your oil as contamination via water without the presence of preservatives could cause yeast and mold to grow and the oil to be spoiled.

Rosehip seed oil can soften lines from aging, it treats dark spots and discoloration, fades scars, moisturizes, and hydrates

It is a dry oil that is non comedogenic and non-irritating which makes it fantastic for acne prone skin. it can even help fade acne scarring over time.

Rosehip Oil is also very high in Vitamins A and C. Vitamin A is a natural retinol- which helps with cell turnover. Vitamin C is great for protecting the skin against free radicals and aiding in collagen production. Yes, it is so pure that it is perfectly safe for children and pregnant mums.

Rosehip seed oil also helps to repair damaged hair, renew damaged scalp tissue, and moisturise hair. The soothing oil is also ideal for calming itchy, dry, or irritated skin and reducing scalp conditions such as dandruff.

Can be safely used on all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Rosehip Oil is very effective in helping to reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, blemishes and skin pigmentation. Rosehip Oil penetrates your skin easily and delivers protective elements such as essential fatty acids, Vitamins C and E, which can decrease discoloration and help stimulate collagen production. Its healing power helps to prevent the formation of stretch marks, which is why many women use it during pregnancy.

Apply two to three sprays in the palm of your hands and apply to your skin/scalp and then gently massage. For best results use Rosehip Oil morning and night.

Rosehip seed oil on its own is a wonderful night serum. Use it alone or on top of moisturiser and let it sink in before getting to sleep. Because of its earthy yellow color- it can stain if it’s not properly sunken into the skin yet.

Rosehip seed oil is also great in moisturisers if you ever want to create your own. This oil is also great in hair and lip serums- adding a nutrient-dense packed punch to whatever you are whipping up.

Water should also be kept away from your oil as contamination via water without the presence of preservatives could cause yeast and mold to grow and the oil to be spoiled.

Argan oil moisturises the skin and hair. It is packed with vitamin E, an antioxidant that works to strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier, which in turn, helps the skin and hair hold on to hydration.

Argan oil treats acne and reduces skins oiliness. It has anti-sebum effects which can regulate the amount of excess sebum on the skin which causes acne.
